I enjoyed stepping into the world of 1920s Chicago with Vera, who works in a typing pool and as a telephone operator but dreams of a life beyond the one he mother had. She begins living the flapper life—drinking, dancing and enjoying the freedom of the Roaring Twenties—until she becomes involved with two rival gangsters, one from Al Capone’s South Side gang and the other from Dion O’Banion’s North Side Mob.

Vera’s choices eventually pull her deeper into the dangerous world of organized crime. After becoming pregnant and marrying one of the men, she finds herself trapped in the mob life, coving up a murder and risking her own life until everything comes crashing down on Valentine’s Day.

I thought the author did an excellent job bringing Prohibition-era Chicago to life, with its gangsters, speakeasies, music, dancing, and flappers. I also appreciated the research that went into the historical setting. I enjoyed learning more about the Roaring Twenties and the world of Chicago during Prohibition.
