Junie is a young enslaved girl living on an Alabama plantation, where she serves as a maid to the plantation owner’s daughter, Violet. Despite the laws of the time, Violet teaches Junie to read, and Junie comes to believe that the two girls are friends. She eventually learns the painful truth that Violet cannot truly be her friend while also being her owner.
Junie faces physical hardships during the day and is haunted at night by the ghost of her deceased sister. She blames herself for sister’s death and must eventually confront the truth about what really happened.
While I could have done without the paranormal aspect of the story, I thought the characters were strong and well developed. Junie’s relationship with her sister was an especially important and moving part of her story. Overall, I enjoyed the book and found Junie’s journey compelling.
