I found this book fascinating and heartbreaking at times. The life of a woman in the 1600s was incredibly difficult, and I especially felt for her when she and her children were taken captive and separated. When she was eventually ransomed and returned, she found herself drawn to aspects of the Indigenous way of life—the freedom from the restrictive clothing and the expectations of colonial society, and the greater independence she experienced compared with the submission expected of her as a wife of a Puritan preacher. Overall, I enjoyed the book and found it an interesting look at what life could be like for women in early America.
