Elsa eventually makes the difficult journey to California, only to find that leaving Texas doesn’t mean leaving hardship behind. She and her children face poverty, prejudice, and unimaginable struggles as she fights to give them the life she believes they deserve.

I loved this book, although it was not an easy journey. My heart broke for Elsa and everything she endured, and I actually cried while reading it. Kristin Hannah is a remarkable author. She captured the desperation, hardship, and resilience of this time in history in a way that felt incredibly honest and real. Elsa’s determination to protect her children and build a better life for them stayed with me long after I finished the book.
