My reading of World War II has often focused on the familiar stories of Europe, but Under the Java Moon opened my eyes to an aspect of the war I knew very little about—the horrific Japanese prison camps in Indonesia.

This story follows a Dutch family through the brutality of the camps and their desperate struggle for freedom, even after the war ended. The conditions they endured were devastating and Heather B. Moore’s storytelling made the hunger, fear, despair, and determination to survive feel incredibly real.

What stayed with me most was realizing the fight for freedom didn’t simply end when the war ended. Their journey continued through the uncertainty and danger of postwar Indonesia.

I’m so grateful I read this book. It was heartbreaking and difficult at times, but it introduced me to a part of World War II I had never experienced before. It’s a powerful reminder of how many stories of war and survival are still waiting to be heard.
